The role of essential omega-3 fatty acids is one of the hottest topics of the day in dry eye treatment, since it has been found anecdotally that increasing these fatty acids in the diet stimulates healthy lipid and aqueous tear production. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in wild ï¬sh, especially tuna, salmon, mackerel, and sardines, as well as in ï¬sh oil. One study found that adding tuna ï¬sh to the diet was effective in reducing the rate of dry eye in women.Omega-3 fatty acids are also found in flaxseed oil. Several years ago, Carl F. Boerner, a Boston-based ophthalmologist, presented data she had gleaned from her practice, where she studied the effect of ï¬ax seed oil on dry eye patients. She found that flaxseed oil relieved the symptoms in 85 percent of her patients. Flaxseed oil is one of the world’s richest sources of omega-3 fatty acids; in fact, it contains twice as much as fish oil benefits. Speciï¬cally, ï¬ax seed oil contains alpha-linolenic acid omega-3; linolenic acid omega-6; and oleic acid omega-. Flaxseed oil can be purchased in health food stores in seed, capsule, or liquid form.
